Life Imprisonment Quashed by Court of Appeal

Paul Simon Smith of Blaby was convicted of the kidnap and sexual assault of a 31-year-old woman. He was given life imprisonment.

The attack happened in November 2012 in Fosse Park. Mr Smith got into the victim’s car, forced her to get him beer from the back of the car and not to look at him, as well as demanding money. He drank the beer, stroked the woman’s leg and told her he “wanted” her.

The court heard that Mr Smith has a history of sexual offending. He has attacked prostitutes twice, raping one of them.

Lord Chief Justice Thomas said the offences were not serious enough for a life sentence. Mr Smith therefore re-sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and 5 years on licence.
